Why pages drop out of the index

A page used to show up in search, and now it is gone. Sometimes it is a penalty, yet more often the cause is technical or lies in the quality of the page itself.

Causes

Why a page disappears

The URL changed without a redirect. The old one dropped out, and the new one is not indexed yet. This is the most common cause after a redesign.
The page became a duplicate. The search engine chose another similar page as the canonical one.
The content was judged low-value. An empty category, a product page without a description, a filter page with three products.
Technical unavailability. The site was down at the moment of crawling – after repeated failures the page is excluded.
Indexing was blocked by accident. Noindex or robots after a template update.

What to do

Action plan

🔍

Inspect the specific URL

The tool in Search Console will name the reason for exclusion.

📊

Assess the scale

One page or a thousand? This determines where to look for the problem.

🔁

Fix it and request a recrawl

After the fix, the page usually comes back within a few weeks.

Note

When this is normal

Deleted products. If the item is gone and there is no replacement, excluding the page is correct.
Technical URLs. Filters and sorting that you blocked on purpose should drop out of the index.
