Filter indexing: open or close

The right answer is both. Close most combinations and turn a dozen of the most popular ones into full-fledged landing pages.

Criterion

How to decide on each filter

Search demand exists – open it. If "leather sofas" is searched hundreds of times a month, it should be a separate page with its own text and meta tags.
No demand – close it. Nobody needs the combination "sofa + green + 180 cm" as a separate page.
Sorting – always close it. "Price: low to high" is a way of viewing the list. Nobody searches for it.

Open page

What a filter needs to become a landing page

🔗

Static address

A normal readable URL instead of a string of parameters.

🏷

Its own meta tags

A unique Title and Description written for the page, separate from the ones inherited from the category.

📝

Text

At least a short description that sets the page apart from its parent category.

🧭

Links

A link from the category or the menu must lead to it, otherwise the crawler will not find it.

Risk

What happens if you open everything

Thousands of junk pages in the index. They compete with each other and with the main categories.
Wasted crawl budget. The crawler never gets to new products.
The site quality score drops. Lots of empty and near-identical pages send a bad signal.
