Specs on the product page: table or text

Shoppers read specs selectively, looking for one or two specific values. The format decides whether they find them in a second or close the tab.

1
format – a table
5–12
parameters per product page
0
specs in the description

Format

Why a table wins

Easy to scan at a glance. The shopper finds the right row immediately without reading the whole block.
Works in filters and comparison. Structured values can be filtered, sorted and compared across products.
Goes into the ad feed. Brand, color, size and condition from the specs are pulled into Shopping ads.
A paragraph with a list fails. Specs buried in the text cannot be filtered and are hard to read.

Presentation

How to lay them out

📊

Key specs on top

Three to five key parameters right away, the rest under "show all".

📏

Consistent units

All weights in the same units, all sizes in the same format – otherwise the filter breaks.

❓

Explain the tricky ones

Give unclear parameters a hover tooltip instead of a bare abbreviation.

Mistakes

What ruins the specs block

Empty rows. "Material: –" is worse than no row at all.
Different sets for similar products. Comparison becomes impossible, and the shopper leaves for a store where comparison works.
Duplicating the description. If the specs repeat the description word for word, one of the blocks is redundant.
