Breadcrumbs: why you need them and how to set them up

The small line "Home → Catalog → Category → Product" looks like a minor detail. In fact, it works on three levels at once: navigation, internal linking and the way the site looks in search results.

3
levels of benefit
1
structured data markup
0
unnecessary links in the chain

Why

Three functions of breadcrumbs

🧭

Navigation

The shopper knows where they are and can go up one level with a single click.

🔗

Internal linking

Every product page passes link weight to its category – with no links placed by hand.

🔍

Appearance in search

With structured data, Google shows the path instead of a bare URL – the snippet looks neater.

Rules

How to do it right

The full path from the home page. The chain should start with the home page and end with the current page.
The current page has no link. The last element is not clickable – that is the standard.
Structured data is mandatory. Without it, the search engine does not recognize the chain and shows a plain URL.
The path matches the structure. Breadcrumbs cannot show a category that is missing from the menu.

Mistakes

What ruins breadcrumbs

A chain that is too long. Five or six levels do not fit on a phone screen and look like a mess.
Different paths for the same product. If a product sits in several categories, the chain should always follow the main category and stay the same every time.
Missing on the mobile version. A common layout mistake: breadcrumbs are hidden on phones, even though that is exactly where they are needed most.
