Product variants: one card or several

A T-shirt in five colors and six sizes – is that thirty products or one? The answer determines how your catalog looks, how stock is counted and how pages rank.

The main rule

When to combine into one card

The same product, different parameters. Size, color, volume, pack size – these are variants. The shopper picks an option inside the card.
One description, one set of specifications. If the text is the same for all options, separate cards create duplicate content.
A benefit for the shopper. They see all options at once and don't search the whole catalog for "is this available in another color".

The exception

When to create separate cards

🔍

Different demand

If people search for "blue" and "black" separately and both get traffic, splitting them may be justified.

📝

Different descriptions

When the options differ in specifications and purpose as well as in a single parameter.

💰

Very different prices

If prices differ several times over, a shared card confuses the shopper and breaks the price filter.

Technically

What has to work correctly

Separate stock for each variant. Otherwise you will sell a size that is out of stock.
The price changes on selection. If different pack sizes cost different amounts, the price should update instantly.
A photo for each option. Pick blue and you see the blue item, with its own shot for every color.
A correct feed. In Shopping ads, each variant is a separate item with its own ID.
Is your catalog bloated by colors and sizes?

We will merge the variants into one card without losing rankings and set up a correct feed for ads.
