Internal linking in an online store: how to do it naturally
Internal links are a tool you fully control. They pass weight between pages and at the same time lead the shopper further through the site.
Why
What internal linking gives you
Passes weight to important pages. The more internal links point to a category, the more important the search engine considers it.
Helps indexing. A page that nothing links to may never get into the index at all.
Guides the shopper. A person should not have to go back to the menu to find a related product.
Where
Places where links work
📝
In category texts
Links to subcategories and brands placed naturally inside sentences.
🛒
On the product page
Similar products, accessories, brand, category.
📰
In blog articles
Every article links to the categories and products it covers.
🧭
Breadcrumbs
They work automatically and pass weight up the structure.
Rules
How not to get it wrong
Anchor text by meaning. Use the name of the page the link leads to instead of "here" or "read more".
Do not overload. Three to five links per text are enough. Twenty look like spam.
Link to live pages. A link to a 404 page or through a redirect wastes weight.
Are some of your pages getting no traffic?
We will build internal linking so that weight flows to the pages that make money.
