Meta Pixel and Conversions API: why you need them and how to set them up correctly
Running targeted ads without a pixel is like shooting blindfolded: the money goes out, and who bought and where they came from remains a mystery. We explain in plain words what the pixel does, why it needs a "partner" in the Conversions API and which events your store must track.

The pixel – eyes in the browser
A piece of code on your website that tells Meta: this user viewed a product, that one added it to the cart, and that one over there made a purchase. Everything is built on this data: retargeting, lookalike audiences, optimization for purchases.
🔌
Conversions API – the backup channel
Ad blockers and iOS restrictions "eat" part of the pixel data. The Conversions API sends events directly from the server and gets past the blocking. Together they give the algorithm back 20-30% of the data the pixel alone would lose.
What to track
Five must-have store events
ViewContent – a product page view. The basis for dynamic retargeting that "shows what they looked at".
AddToCart – adding to the cart. The "almost bought" audience is the hottest one to bring back.
InitiateCheckout – the start of checkout. Shows exactly where buyers drop off.
Purchase with value – a purchase with the order value passed along. Without it you get neither ROAS nor optimization for high-value buyers.
Search / Lead – site search and inquiries (if some orders come through forms/calls). They complete the picture for niches with a "long" decision cycle.
On modern e-commerce platforms the pixel and events are connected with built-in tools, no developer needed. The key step after installation is to check every event with a test order: a pixel installed "just to tick the box" that sends broken data is worse than no pixel at all.
Common pitfalls
Three mistakes that make your data worthless
2️⃣
Two pixels at once
The old one from the previous contractor + a new one = duplicated events and broken statistics. One store – one pixel.
💸
Purchase without value
The purchase is recorded, the amount is missing – the algorithm can't tell a UAH 200 order from a UAH 20,000 one and optimizes at random.
🕳️
Installed after the ads launched
All the traffic before installation means lost data and lost audiences. The pixel goes in on the day the website launches, even if ads are planned "sometime later".
