Empty categories: how they hurt your store
The category was created "for the future", and the products never appeared. It seems to just sit there without bothering anyone. In fact, it bothers both the shopper and the search engine.
8
products – the minimum for a category
Harm
Three problems with empty categories
🚪
The shopper leaves
They click a section, see "No products found" and close the site. That is a direct loss.
📉
A low-quality signal
The search engine sees a page with no content and no value. Many such pages drag down the rating of the whole site.
🗺
A diluted structure
The menu is filled with sections that contain nothing, and the truly important ones get lost among them.
What to do
Possible solutions
Hide it until it is filled. The simplest and most correct option: the category exists in the admin panel and stays hidden from shoppers.
Merge it with a neighboring one. If there are few products and no more are expected, turn it into a filter or a subcategory of a larger category.
Fill it. If the product line is really needed, add at least eight to ten items before opening it.
A special case
The category is temporarily empty
A seasonal product has sold out. Do not delete the page – it has accumulated weight. Keep it with an explanation and links to related sections.
The product is gone for good. Then you need a redirect to the category closest in content instead of a 404 page.
Does your catalog have many empty or weak categories?
We will audit the structure: what to hide, what to merge and what to fill first.
