Sitemap.xml for a store with thousands of products
A sitemap is a list of the URLs you consider important. The search engine uses it as a hint about where to go first, especially when the website is large.

Rules
What belongs in the sitemap
Only pages that should be in the index. Categories, products, articles, landing pages. Leave out the cart, filters and closed sections.
Only status code 200. URLs with redirects and errors in the sitemap do harm: they waste the crawler's resources.
Accurate last-modified dates. The date must match a real change to the page, otherwise search engines simply ignore it.
Automatic updates. The sitemap should rebuild itself whenever products are added, with no manual updates once a year.

What to do with thousands of products
📂
Split it into files
Separate sitemaps for categories, products and articles – this makes problems easier to find.
🗂
Sitemap index
A file that links to all the others. This is the one you submit to Search Console.
📊
Check the statistics
Search Console shows how many URLs from the sitemap are actually indexed – this is your diagnostics.
Diagnostics
What the sitemap reveals
The gap between "submitted" and "indexed". If only two out of ten thousand URLs are indexed, the sitemap is fine – the cause lies in page quality or technical limitations.
It is a discovery tool, separate from ranking. The sitemap helps search engines find pages; on its own it does not improve rankings.
Some of your products are missing from the index?
We will check your sitemap and indexing and find exactly where pages get lost.
