"Similar products" and "frequently bought together": how to set them up

Two different blocks with different jobs. One saves the order when a product does not fit, the other raises the average order value. Mixing them up is the most common mistake.

The difference

Two blocks – two jobs

"Similar products" – alternatives. The same type of product in a different version, price or brand. It saves the sale when a specific item does not fit or is out of stock.
"Frequently bought together" – add-ons. What the buyer needs in addition: a case for a phone, food for a bowl, brackets for a shelf. It raises the order value.
Keep them separate. Showing five similar mirrors instead of a mount for the mirror gives the buyer no help and means competing with yourself.

Placement

What to show where

🛒

On the product page

"Frequently bought together" – right below the buy button, while the decision is still being made.

🔄

Lower on the product page

"Similar products" – after the description, for those who find the current item unsuitable.

🧺

In the cart

Small add-ons before checkout: batteries, gift wrapping, a warranty.

Setup

How to make it work

Manual links for best-sellers. Automation does not know that this exact filter fits this model. For your top products, it pays to set the links by hand.
Only what is in stock. Recommending an out-of-stock product is a guaranteed way to frustrate the buyer.
A different price. An add-on should be noticeably cheaper than the main product, otherwise it looks like a hard sell.
