How many products a category should have
Too few, and the category looks empty and ranks poorly. Too many, and the shopper can't choose. The optimum depends on the niche, but the limits are roughly the same for everyone.
Limits
How full a category should be
Fewer than eight products – too early to open. The category looks unfinished, filters in it make no sense, and competing in search is almost impossible.
20–60 products – the comfort zone. There is plenty to choose from, filters work, and the page is not overloaded.
More than 300 – time to split the category or strengthen the filters. Otherwise the shopper scrolls to the tenth page of pagination and still can't find what they need.
Solutions
What to do with the extremes
➕
Few products
Merge it with a neighboring category or hide it until it is filled. Don't leave it open "just in case".
➗
Many products
Add subcategories based on real search queries or strengthen filters and sorting.
🔍
A huge number
With thousands of items, the key tools are internal search and convenient faceted navigation – new menu levels help far less.

About pagination
24–48 products per page – the working range. Fewer means too many clicks, more means slow loading, especially on a phone.
Infinite loading instead of pages. It works for the shopper, but it needs a separate setup so that search engines can see all the products.
