Structured data for an online store: where to start

Schema markup tells a search engine exactly what is on the page. For an online store, it directly affects how the snippet looks in search results – and how many people click on it.

Types

What an online store needs

🏷

Product

Name, price, availability, rating. Gives a rich snippet with the price and stars.

🧭

Breadcrumbs

Shows the page path in search results instead of a bare URL.

❓

FAQ

Questions and answers can appear right in search results.

🏢

Organization

Name, logo, contacts, social media profiles – for brand recognition.

Rules

For the markup to work

The data must match the page. The price in the markup and on the screen is the same. Otherwise the markup is ignored.
Do not mark up what is not there. A rating without reviews leads to manual penalties and brings no advantage.
Check after implementation. The official validator shows errors and warnings before the search engine sees them.

What to expect

A rich snippet is never guaranteed. Google decides on its own whether to show it. Without markup, though, there is no chance at all.
The effect shows in click-through rate and leaves rankings as they are. Markup does not move a site up in search results; it makes it more noticeable in the same position.
