How to restructure a catalog without losing rankings

Changing the structure of a live store is the riskiest operation in SEO. It can be done without losses, provided you act in the right order.

1
URL mapping
301
redirect for every page
2–8 wks
to recover

Sequence

Five steps to a safe restructure

1

Record the current state

Export a list of all URLs with their traffic and rankings. This is your baseline.

2

Design the new structure

On paper, before any changes on the site. Build it around search queries instead of internal convenience.

3

Build the URL map

Every old URL must point to a specific new one – the closest possible match in content.

4

Launch with redirects

Changes and redirects go live at the same time. There must be no period when old URLs return 404.

After

What to do right after the restructure

Update the sitemap. Submit it to Search Console to speed up recrawling of the new URLs.
Check internal links. Menus, banners and texts must link directly to the new URLs instead of going through redirects – every redirect loses link equity.
Monitor errors for two weeks. The Search Console report will show URLs that return 404 or redirect loops.

Reality

What to expect

A dip for a few weeks is normal. The search engine needs time to recrawl and re-evaluate the new URLs.
Without redirects, the dip becomes permanent. This is the main reason stores lose traffic after a redesign.
Avoid changing everything at once. If the catalog is large, restructure it section by section and track the results.
