How to build convenient on-site search for your store

People who use on-site search buy several times more often than those who browse the catalog. They already know what they need. The only question is whether they will find it.

The minimum

Three features search cannot work without

⌨️

Suggestions as you type

The shopper sees products before pressing Enter – and goes straight to the product page.

🔤

Typo tolerance

Search should find a product even when its name is typed with a typo or in the wrong keyboard layout.

🏷

Search by SKU

A must for technical niches, spare parts and tools – people there search by the product code.

Details

What improves the results

Synonyms. A shopper searches for "hoover" while your product is called "vacuum cleaner" – without a synonym dictionary they will find nothing.
Search by attributes. By brand, color, material and compatibility as well as by name.
Filters in the results. When a search returns two hundred items, the shopper needs the same filters as in the category.

The key point

The "nothing found" page

This is the most important search page. Beyond reporting that nothing was found, it should offer a way forward.
What to put on it. Similar products, popular categories, a contact form and a field for a new query with suggestions.
Check the report of zero-result queries. It is a ready-made list of what is missing from your catalog or your search setup.
Your site search cannot find your own products?

We will set up search with suggestions, synonyms and SKU search – and show you what people searched for without results.
