Product attributes: which ones you need and which get in the way
Attributes are no place for everything you found in the supplier's price list. Each of them should either help shoppers choose or work in a filter. The rest only clutters the product card.

Criteria
Which attributes to keep
The ones people choose by. Size, power, material, compatibility – what a shopper compares before buying.
The ones that work in a filter. If a parameter helps narrow the choice within a category, it belongs in the attributes instead of the description text.
The ones needed for ads. The product feed uses some of the attributes: brand, condition, size, color, GTIN.
Problems
What breaks the product card and filters
🌀
Inconsistent value formats
"1,5 kg", "1500 g", "1.5kg" – for a filter these are three different values, and it breaks.
📋
An attribute for a single product
A parameter filled in for three items out of a thousand is useless in a filter.
🕳
Empty fields
"Warranty: –" looks worse than having no such row at all.
Order
How to put things in order
Bring values to a single format. One unit of measurement, one notation, no extra characters.
Remove what nobody uses. Check the filter statistics: parameters nobody clicks can be removed from filtering.
Different sets for different categories. A refrigerator and a T-shirt cannot share the same list of attributes.
Are the attributes in your catalog a mess?
We will put them in order: unify the formats, set up the filters and prepare the data for Shopping ads.
